M.A. Policies

You can find departmental, college and university-wide information related to academic programs, policies, and appeals on the General Catalog and Graduate College websites.

If you feel you have been treated unfairly, there are a number of resources available located in the Summary of Grievance Types and Responsible Parties and the Graduate Grievance Policy .

Title IX – No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. The Dean of Students website offers many resources to assist if needed.

The Ombuds Program is in place to assist in effective communication, collaboration and conflict management.

M.A. Internship Information 

  • The required Digital Information Management Capstone course, LIS 676, is actually a practicum that is administered separately from the internship or independent study courses for the M.A. program. 
  • M.A. students working in libraries may complete either the LIS 698 (Capstone Internship) or LIS 693 (Internship) at their current place of employment, however, the internship must be in a different department under a different supervisor doing work that is clearly differentiated from regular duties.
  • For graduate students, LIS 698 goes beyond a regular internship through explicit linking of student learning objectives and program outcomes with workplace experience in the information professions. Students must have completed 18 units including all core courses and their mid-program reflection and Plan of Study in order to be enrolled in LIS 698. LIS 698 is required for M.A. students, however, you may choose to take LIS 693, in addition, as a free elective in your program. Except under rare circumstances, students working in libraries are not exempt from the LIS 698 requirement. 
  • The School of Information’s individual studies director and the graduate faculty advisor must approve all graduate internships.

Transfer Information for M.A. Students

We generally do not allow transfer credits from another institution to be applied to the M.A. degree. Exceptions to this must meet all of the following:

  • Maximum of 6 transfer credits can be applied toward M.A. that were earned from another ALA-accredited Library and Information Science program.
  • Courses must have received a letter grade of A or B.
  • Transfer credits must be approved by M.A. Library and Information Science advisor.
  • Credits must not be more than 6 years old relative to the semester of graduation.
  • Transfer credits cannot be used to take the place of any of the core courses.
  • Submit transfer credit form via GradPath to determine eligibility. 

The Archives and Digital Information Certificates may also allow up to 6 transfer credits, but there are particular parameters for applying prior coursework to the graduate certificates that must be discussed with the M.A. Library and Information Science advisor.
