Our faculty and students are engaged in research around all aspects of the information sciences without regard for disciplinary boundaries. We do research in artificial intelligence, data management and curation, computer vision, computer-mediated communication and learning, natural language processing, social networking, human computer interfaces, dark networks, computational art and music creation, library sciences, and entertainment technologies. Explore our research areas.
Information Collections, Libraries, Databases, Archives, & Ethics
Our faculty study topics such as digital archives, artifact preservation, information organization, museums, institutions of cultural heritage, and databases across business, sciences, and other contexts.
Machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, & Algorithmic Thinking
Our faculty develop machine learning/artificial intelligence algorithms, engage in Bayesian modeling/inference, and build unsupervised learning algorithms – teaching computers to do such things as understand scientific text, play music, or learn the nuances of personal relationships.
Applied Natural Language Processing
Our faculty develop useful natural-language processing methods to solve information organization problems, from evaluating information quality of depression websites, automated structuring of museum labels, to converting descriptive text into tabular formats.
Virtual Reality, Video Game Design, & Human-Computer Interaction
Our faculty engage in virtual/augmented/mixed reality (XR), video game design and development, and human-computer interaction – enhancing these forms of interactive technologies for improved user experience and performance.
Biological Informatics
Our faculty are actively involved with medical information text mining for cancer signaling networks, text mining and biological ontology construction in biological taxonomic literature, and development of biological ontologies and standards.
Data Science, Social Network Analysis, Computational Social Science
These researchers analyze large data sets and strategies for visualizing big data.
Social Science & Internet Studies
Our faculty engage in empirical qualitative or quantitative studies of human behavior, including studies of mediated interpersonal interaction, educational uses of new technologies, the management of digital privacy, and online identities.
Internet of Things
Our faculty work to advance what we know about the connectivity of devices and the safe use of sensors for data collection, measurement, or human services.
