Description

Provides research assistance to faculty, students, and other users of the Law Library; Teaches the for-credit Legal Research Methodologies class, and provides research instruction in other courses as needed; and supervises delivery of one or more library services to the Law School.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conduct extensive, in-depth, legal, non-legal, and bibliographic research for law faculty including use of new technologies. Provide research assistance to law faculty, law students, and other users of the Law Library. Participate in rotating coverage of the Reference Desk.
  • Create and maintain online research guides.
  • Participate in Collection Development activities for print and online sources.
  • Teach legal research methodologies for credit in the law school’s J.D. program. Develop curriculum as necessary. Write letters of recommendation. Provide bibliographic instruction in other instructors’ classes.
  • Oversee and supervise one or more law library functions, to be determined.
  • Participate in professional development and service activities. Stay abreast of current developments in the field, attend meetings & conferences. Serve on local, regional, or national committees. Obtain or retain a membership in the American Association of Law Libraries and in one or more of its special interest sections.
  • Assist in interdepartmental planning activities. Assist with the process of interviewing and hiring professional staff for the Law Library. Attend law staff, law faculty and main University Libraries’ staff meetings and workshops. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Library Science (MLS), Master of Information Science (MIS), Master of Science in Library Science (MS) or related field from A.L.A. accredited library school and Juris Doctor (J.D.) from A.B.A. accredited law school or foreign equivalent.
  • Candidates with one of the two degrees, depending upon experience and aptitude, may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Law library experience.
  • Knowledge & experience in one or more library specialties such as electronic resource management or access services.
  • Knowledge of full text online legal databases and library systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lecture to both large and small groups.
  • Demonstrated skillful use of computers, including the MS Office Suite.
  • Experience with using Internet resources, research tools, library systems, and emerging technologies.
  • Proven ability to communicate with a variety of staff and users.
  • Proven ability to effectively express ideas, policies, and plans verbally and in writing.
  • Experience teaching legal research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Ability to analyze problems and determine solutions to problems of a complex nature.
  • Ability to learn and use new technologies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other members of the library staff and library users.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to meet deadlines.
