Description

About the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program

The goal of the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program is to diversify the staff of museums and visual arts organizations in LA County to better reflect the communities they serve. This is an imperative in a region that has long enjoyed a majority-minority population.

The program offers paid internships in core areas of museum work such as curatorship, conservation, education, publications, and public programming. No prior work experience or educational background in the arts is required.

About the Internship

The Library Foundation of Los Angeles seeks a curatorial intern to assist with the planning and implementation of the upcoming exhibition and program series, No Prior Art. The project, produced in partnership with the Los Angeles Public Library as part of the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time initiative, will open at Central Library in Fall 2024.

No Prior Art explores the nature of creativity by taking the concept of invention as the meeting place of art and science. This project will uncover fascinating and underrepresented stories from the history of invention, survey artist inventors, explore Los Angeles as a place of cross-disciplinary innovation, and celebrate our public libraries as places for active creation and collaboration, not simply the absorption and dissemination of information and ideas.

The Curatorial intern’s tasks will include independent research, communication with exhibition lenders and project partners, project management, writing and original content creation for web and exhibition materials, and pre-production of public programs to take place at libraries citywide. The selected intern will work with LFLA and LAPL staff and other project collaborators to get an in-depth overview of the process and work that goes into producing a large-scale exhibition and program series.

Internship Timeline

10 weeks, June 20 – August 25, 2023, work hours 9:30 am – 5:30 pm, Monday - Friday (with flexibility). The internship is in person at Central Library with the option of occasional remote work.

Compensation

Total stipend of $6,800 for 10 weeks of full-time work.

To apply

Submit your résumé, cover letter, and a brief writing sample (1-3 pages on any subject can be something completed for school showing independent research capacity and writing style).

If you have any questions, contact Todd Lerew, Exhibition Curator and Intern Supervisor, toddlerew@lfla.org, 213-292-6266.
