ArtCenter College of Design Archives & Special Collections seeks a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Intern for Summer 2023 for an internship to create virtual exhibits using digitized archival materials.
Part of the College Library, the Archives & Special Collections department collects, preserves, and makes available materials related to the history of ArtCenter and other rare and unique materials related to art and design. The collections include photographs documenting the College and students from the 1930s-present, institutional records, special collections books, audio, and video.
The internship is an in-person position of 35 hours per week. The internship will take place over 10 consecutive weeks from June to August 2023 – exact start and end dates TBD in collaboration with candidates.
The schedule for this position is Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m (with some flexibility).
The Archives & Special Collections intern position is funded by the Getty Foundation through its Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Program. The intern will therefore participate in educational events offered by the Getty Foundation during the course of the internship period (TBA and considered work.)
During the course of the ten-week internship, the intern will create three virtual exhibits and gain experience with archival and curatorial skills, including selecting items from collections, digitizing photographs and documents, researching the history and context of the materials, and writing exhibition text. They will also gain experience working with online exhibition software.
The topics for the exhibits may include:
- Early photography education, 1930-1960. Drawing from several collections, this exhibition will feature photographs that document the ArtCenter Photography Department. It includes images of classrooms, labs, field trips around California (some with instructor Ansel Adams) and student work, as well as course catalogs and brochures.
- Jules Bates photographs. This collection features documentation of punk and new wave in Los Angeles in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including punk clubs, fashion shoots, celebrity portraits, and album covers.
Required Qualifications:
- Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internships are intended for members of groups underrepresented in professions related to museums and the visual arts, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent.
- Must be a currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate in either a bachelor’s degree program or an associate’s degree program and have completed at least one semester or two quarters of college by June 2023. Students who graduated the semester or quarter immediately before the internship begins are also eligible. (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible.)
- Must be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County
- Be a United States citizen or permanent resident (non-citizen authorized to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis; also known as a "green card" holder). Students with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) status valid through the internship period are also eligible.
- Students who have previously served as Getty Marrow Undergraduate summer interns at ArtCenter College of Design are not eligible for consideration
- ArtCenter staff members and relatives of ArtCenter staff or board members are not eligible
- Enjoys being part of a dynamic and diverse campus environment

- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Must be able to operate a variety of office equipment including computers and scanners. Tasks may involve extended periods of time in front of a computer monitor and keyboard. Due to the nature of the work with archival materials, there may be exposure to dust.

ArtCenter Employees have a Mandatory Duty to Report

Vaccination Requirement
ArtCenter is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all members of our community.
