Position Highlights In accordance with the direction of the Museum Director, the archivist will implement core archival functions of the Archive of Visual Arts. Core archival functions will include: selection and acquisition of materials; arrangement and description; reference services and access; preservation and protection; and outreach, advocacy, and promotion. The archivist will set and administer policy to allow campus and public access. Functioning in a strategic nature, the archivist will demonstrate strong administrative, organizational, communication, and analytical skills, and requires both independent and collaborative work.

Duties & Responsibilities

Oversight and Administration

  • Manage the activities of the AVA under the guidance of the Museum director.
  • Implement general knowledge of archival theory, methodology, and practice appropriate for records and papers of all media and technologies: paper, digital, audio, and visual.
  • Plan, organize, and carry out archival development in conjunction with Museum director.
  • Continue in the development of the archive’s mission and vision; help define the collecting policy and priorities.
  • Maintains in-depth knowledge of changes and trends in archival best practices.
  • Develop and maintain departmental AVA budget.

Acquisitions

  • Identify, collect, and preserve archival materials that fit the scope of the archive’s mission.
  • Process and catalog AVA donations, research potential software, and compile finding aids and online records in the Museum’s PastPerfect database system.
  • In conjunction with the director and AZ Arts Development Team, participates in relationship management activities related to acquisitions.
  • Seek external grant and private funding to support the archive.

Collection Management

  • Facilitate research of the collections and libraries by patrons, staff, and researchers.
  • Coordinate with conservation professionals as needed and resources allow.
  • Handle rights and reproduction requests.
  • Environmental monitoring; scheduling building maintenance and cleaning.
  • Manage interns and volunteers.

Contributions to Museum and Profession

  • Curate occasional exhibitions from the AVA collections in collaboration with Museum staff.
  • Help with major Museum events including exhibition openings, etc.
  • Advocate AVA to potential donors and network with the Arizona archives community.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • American Library Association (ALA) accredited Masters in Library and Information Science (MLIS), Museum Studies, or related field.
  • Three years or more of experience in libraries, archives, or records management.
