 Penfield Library is a dynamic, innovative, and learning-centered environment serving students, faculty, and staff at SUNY Oswego. The Library supports campus curriculum, teaching, and research, with a liaison program that provides information literacy instruction, specialized reference, and collection development in all curricular areas. The Library is an active participant in shared SUNY libraries-wide initiatives. The Library is in a time of change, magnified by the recent pandemic: assessing services, reexamining our organizational structure, exploring new ways of engaging with faculty and new campus partnerships, and planning for future building renovations. Penfield Library at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty Access Services Librarian (Senior Assistant Librarian or Associate Librarian).

Compensation: Minimum Salary- Senior Assistant Librarian $52,842; Associate Librarian $62,466. Dependent on rank and commensurate with experience, plus full New York State benefits package.

Description of Responsibilities:

The Access Services Librarian will:

  • Lead and inspire the access services unit, including circulation, course reserves, resource sharing (interlibrary loan), and stacks management.
  • Design, implement, and participate in initiatives to advance the work of the unit. Assess processes, policies, and operations to (a) improve efficiency or the user experience (b) promote and improve the use of library collections and resources, and (c) communicate the work of the department to the library and/or institution as a whole.
  • Directly supervise and provide mentoring and support for two FTE employees - a resource sharing associate, and a senior library clerk, who oversees 5 full-time clerks plus student workers.
  • Serve as the expert for the access services/fulfillment components of the library management system. Collaborate with the Electronic Resources and Systems Librarian to assess and implement system changes.
  • Collaborate with the Collection Management Librarian and Acquisitions and Collections Associate to facilitate stacks projects.
  • Serve as liaison to assigned academic departments. Participate in collection development and shared instruction initiatives. Participate in Research Help Desk rotation for on-site and virtual reference. Responsibilities will occasionally require evening availability.
  • As a member of the faculty, serve on various campus-wide and college governance committees, SUNY-wide committees, and make scholarly and creative contributions to the profession.
  • Engage in educational opportunities and work to increase awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion.

 

In addition, the Access Services Librarian will be expected to demonstrate the potential for excellence in librarianship, scholarship, and service; commitment to undergraduate and graduate education; and possess communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with an increasingly diverse array of students and colleagues.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Librarianship/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program by time of appointment.
  • Two years of experience in a full-time position supervising permanent employees (not necessarily in a library setting).
  • Experience in circulation and/or interlibrary loan services (student or clerical work acceptable).
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrated interest or engagement with social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion issues, through professional or community experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively adapt to and use new technologies and software.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the Alma library services platform and with Illiad resource sharing software.
  • Experience with reference service, collection development and/or instruction.
  • Experience in an academic library.
