Position Highlights The University of Arizona Libraries invites applications for a Digital Preservation Analyst to support the University of Arizona Libraries digital preservation program as part of the Digital Preservation and Production Unit. The Analyst will report to and work closely with the Digital Preservation Librarian to expand, scale, support, and oversee workflows and services for the various streams of content stewarded by the University of Arizona Libraries. The successful candidate will also work in close collaboration with stakeholders in other departments including Special Collections, Technology Strategy and Services, and Research Engagement, to ensure that the full breadth of the Libraries unique digital assets are safeguarded and stewarded according to good practices. The Digital Preservation Analyst performs a sizable portion of duties in the Libraries’ Digital Preservation Lab, which is the site of significant innovation and stewardship, deploying forensic analysis of born-digital media to ensure both preservation and access for the libraries' distinctive special collections. The Analyst processes incoming and legacy born-digital media, such as optical media (CDs/DVDs), flash drives, external/internal hard drives, floppy disks, and other dynamic digital objects in support of their preservation and access. The Analyst will also be responsible for creating and maintaining documentation of workflows, setting up hardware and testing software, performing format analysis and migration, and conducting research as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

  • Performs forensic capture, imaging, and analysis of digital materials on removable media sources utilizing the BitCurator environment, and other tools. 
  • Works with the Digital Preservation Librarian and content stewards to prepare legacy digital content for long term storage. Utilizes the BagIt standard to prepare standardized archival packages for long term storage environments. 
  • Analyzes and identifies data types, file formats, and their dependencies using various hardware and software. Performs risk analyses and format migrations as needed. 
  • Works closely with the Digital Preservation Librarian to research, test, and integrate components of digital preservation systems, software, storage, and metadata, to iterate and mature the digital preservation program. 
  • Assists with coordinating the nascent web archiving program, including working with colleagues on content selection, capture, QC, preservation, and ongoing access. 
  • Works with the Digital Preservation Librarian and TeSS to troubleshoot hardware and software issues, as well as plan for equipment upgrades or refreshes. 
  • Works with Digital Preservation Librarian and Special Collections staff on strategies and processes for capturing digital accessions from donors, including putting together a mobile kit for capturing materials outside of the Library.
  • Analyzes, researches, and improves workflows to ensure long-term care for born digital and digitized materials.
  • Creates and updates documentation and training materials on Digital Preservation Lab processes and equipment. Participates in and provides training for both technical and non-technical colleagues on workflows and tools.
  • Engages with the larger digital preservation community; keeps abreast of emerging strategies such as emulation and e-mail archiving; and works with the Digital Preservation Librarian on strategic programmatic improvements.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of standards and best practices for digital preservation standards, concepts, and strategies.
  • Aptitude and interest in learning new technologies and skills.
  • An aptitude and interest in learning new technologies and skills.
  • Knowledge of technologies and tools such as Archive-It, Browsertrix, Conifer, Brozzler, and Heritrix. 
  • Knowledge of national and international efforts addressing digital preservation issues.
  • Excellent analytical, time management, organizational, and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage projects, plan and execute workflows, track progress and meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Familiarity and comfort with executing programs, tasks, and processes from the command-line.
  • Familiarity with file format analysis, and file format characterization and analysis registries and tools such as PRONOM, JHOVE, and FITS.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work dependably and collegially in a cross-functional and collaborative workplace, one that values and leverages the benefits of diverse perspectives.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional-level experience required.
  • 3 years of relevant work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library & Information Science, or related field.
  • Experience with digital forensics tools, techniques, and practices (BitCurator environment, disk imaging, data migration, etc.)
  • Experience with Python or other methods for creating scripts to automate tasks.
  • Experience with testing, refining, and documenting workflows for digital materials at a library, archives, or research institution.
  • Experience with web archiving principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Experience with digital preservation systems and processes, including systems that provide access to born digital archival content, such as Preservica and Samvera.
  • Experience with the preservation metadata standards PREMIS and with working with XML.
  • Experience utilizing the BagIt standard for transferring structured digital content.
  • Coursework or work experience in an archives or Special Collections environment.
